President Assures India Of Political Solution For Minorities, Signs 7 Pacts Including Interconnecting Electricity Grids Of Two Countries

India has expressed its concerns over the plight of displaced Tamils and pressed for a political settlement of the Tamil issue when Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had discussions with President Mahinda Rajapakse. President Rajapakse assured India that his government would quickly resettle displaced Tamils and would present a political solution to the national question.





According to India media President Rajapakse had briefed Indian Prime Minister regarding steps taken by his government to forge a consensus on a political solution to the ethnic conflict revolving around devolution of powers to the minorities.
 
After the talks the two parties signed seven pacts that include areas of economy, security, power and energy, railways and culture. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on interconnecting electricity grids of the two countries was also signed. Two MoUs were signed on the transfer of sentenced persons and mutual legal assistance in criminal matters. A pact on laying Talaimannar-Madhu rail link was also signed.
